Pier 97 Park Station
Hudson River Park, New York, NY, USA
Under construction

The Pier 97 Park Station will provide a variety of both public-facing and back-of-house programs that will enrich visitor and staff experiences at the north end of Hudson River Park. Strategically positioned along a main pedestrian and biker thoroughfare, the building will operate as a visual landmark that will entice visitors to explore the new Pier 97 park designed by !melk.

The Park Station will include a café, public restrooms, and a bicycle station as well as staff break rooms, a staff vehicle maintenance shop, and storage. These distinct programs are differentiated by individual volumes of unique height and depth which punctuate the long, rectangular bar to create views to the waterfront beyond.

The volumes are clad in aluminum composite panels which reflect light from the river differently throughout the day. A metal louver system beginning at 12 feet above ground level wraps around the perimeter of the building and adjacent service yard, unifying the different volumes underneath. The louvers gradually rotate from horizontal at the bottom to vertical at the top, creating a transparency gradient that reveals different perspectives of the rooflines beneath from different vantage points. The louvers’ iridescent finish lends them a visual quality reminiscent of light shimmering on the adjacent Hudson River, unifying structure with site.
